MARIANA FERNÁNDEZ MORA
I’m a researcher, artist and writer working at the intersection of artistic research, technology and critical theory. My work traces the historical and ongoing connections between algorithmic systems, knowledge production and extractivism.
Through my Professional Doctorate, Entangled Machines, with the Visual Methodologies Collective at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, I’m developing the concept of “Planetary Somatics” to explore how computational systems reshape bodies, ecologies and forms of perception.

What Remains Unsettled
MU Eindhoven
What Remains Unsettled explores the relationship between deep-sea mining and the expansion of energy and computational infrastructures.
The installation centres on the Clarion–Clipperton Zone in the Pacific Ocean, where mineral-rich nodules support deep-sea life while attracting growing interest in extraction. The prospect of mining also funds research into these environments, entangling the knowledge that reveals their ecological richness with the means to exploit them.
Across two screens, a particle landscape and a synchronised data terminal connect financial trading, mining governance, ocean currents and ecological recovery. These datasets shape the landscape’s movement, dispersal and partial return, alongside an underwater soundscape altered by delay and reverberation. Historical records give way to a speculative scenario of expanding mining activity through 2050.
A sculptural interpretation of a sediment plume completes the triptych, bringing disturbance into physical space. The title evokes both suspended particles and ecological relationships that remain altered long after extraction has stopped.

Restless Grounds
Publication
Restless Grounds is a publication of the Slow AI project, bringing together artistic and theoretical contributions that explore speculative futures in relation to algorithmic technologies. Slow AI is an initiative by Mariana Fernández Mora that challenges the fast-paced, extractive narratives of artificial intelligence by reimagining AI and algorithmic systems through the lens of slowness. The project is a collaboration between the Visual Methodologies Collective (AUAS) and the Algorithmic Cultures Research Group at the Sandberg Institute (GRA), kindly funded by the Centre of Expertise Creative Innovation (CoECI) and supported by ARIAS Amsterdam and the Artificial Worlds group.
The notion of Slow AI has emerged in various critical discussions around AI ethics, sustainability and accountability. Scholar Timnit Gebru has invoked the term to call for a more deliberate and thoughtful approach to AI, questioning the extractive and accelerated logics that dominate its development. In the Netherlands, AIxDesign’s project invokes counter-narratives beyond big tech, drawing inspiration from movements like slow food and slow fashion to challenge corporate-first AI development. This publication aligns with and expands upon these discussions, focusing on decolonial, feminist, and kinship-based perspectives to explore how slowness can foster alternative technological imaginaries through material inquiry and artistic research methods.

Slow AI
Research project at AUAS
Slow AI is a research project initiated by Mariana Fernández Mora that explores slowness as a shift in attention, values and modes of engagement with artificial intelligence. It questions the imperatives of speed, efficiency and optimisation that shape technological development, examining their relationship to extraction and the organisation of knowledge, labour and resources.
The project’s collective research sessions draw on philosopher Erik Rietveld’s concept of Material Playgrounds: settings for embodied, fascination-driven exploration of the affordances of materials and technologies, without predetermined uses or outcomes. Through this approach, artists, researchers and participants investigate the possibilities for action and engagement that emerge through encounters with AI’s social, material and ecological conditions. Slowness becomes a methodological orientation for attending to these relations, questioning established technological uses and imagining different sociomaterial practices.
Based at the Visual Methodologies Collective at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Slow AI is part of the AIsquared coalition with the Netherlands Film Academy and the University of Amsterdam, in collaboration with the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision.
The project is funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) through the research programme Innovation and Networks: Slow AI (NWA.1418.24.036).

Restless Grounds Podcast
The Restless Grounds podcast is an ongoing audio initiative that emerged from the Slow AI project (2024–ongoing) as a way to disseminate and further explore the concept of slowness in relation to algorithmic technologies such as AI. While Slow AI develops slowness as a research principle and ethical orientation within artistic research, Restless Grounds extends this work into the public domain, cultivating accessible formats through which diverse audiences can engage with questions of technology, power, ecology, and care.
The project is grounded in the understanding that AI systems are not neutral tools but are deeply entangled with histories of extraction, colonialism, labour, and environmental transformation. Dominant technological narratives tend to obscure these entanglements behind promises of optimisation, scale, and innovation rooted in solutionist and technologically determinist thinking. Restless Grounds responds by foregrounding dialogue as a method, fostering conversations in which these histories and conditions can be unpacked, contested, and reimagined together.
